Deciphering the Defined: Fathoming Creativity // ‘Collecting Creativity’

Please see process and documentation below.

‘a working out, a thinking out, of all the implications of all aspects of the concept’

Joseph Kosuth, excerpt from The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA Highlights, New York: The Museum of Modern Art, revised 2004, originally published 1999, p. 257.

‘the dual relation between the thing and its definition, an image and its model, an illustration and its theory’

Marcel Broodthaers , Musee d’Art Moderne, Department Des Aigles. Section Des Figures, 1972 by Dirk Snauwaert

Like Joseph Kosuth’s ‘One and…’ series, each member of the collaboration will take on one spoke of creativity: its teachable qualities, its confinement in text, and the very process of creation. They all form a wider investigation which questions…What is creativity?

‘Creativity:
is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible or a physical object.’

For our joint work, we interviewed members of the public asking the simple base question of “What is creativity” and, from this, allowed the conversation to develop organically.

A selection of stills from our interviews

We edited the footage to create a short, snappy, yet individualised experience of creativity for each person. Each profession ranged from businessman, retiree, florist, grounds man to fellow art student etc. Each had a unique take on creativity that couldn’t be pinned down to one concise definition.

‘not only how information can mean such different things to different people, but how we each weight it’

Chris Kraus, in Social Practices p.164

Clips to contextualise their responses, taken from our own journey to discover creativity, were then over-layed.

Displayed on loop, the film lacks conclusion and, therefore, refuses to summarise creativity as a phenomenon. In this way, the questioned remains unanswered and creativity left undefined and impenetrable
