During our first week of Year 2 we were given the opportunity to visit the Artangel exhibition at Reading Prison. This exhibition utilized the space which in turn, could be seen to be part of the art itself. Artists such as Nan Goldin, Richard Hamilton, Roni Horn and Steve McQueen were featured as well as writers contributing to the theme of imprisonment. The exhibition drew heavily from the life and confinement of Oscar Wilde and prison life in general. As an experience, the prison space aided to the – often – oppressive feel of the artwork and gave a weight that centered the exhibition in the prison’s rich history. Knowing that people’s lives have been situated in such a space further heightened this experience.
